It's time for Missouri senate leaders, president pro tem Sen. Rob Mayer and Senate Majority Leader Tom Dempsey, both republicans who favor receiving the federal funds, to put a stop to this. There is overwhelming bipartisan support for accepting the funds in the Missouri Senate and House (where the bill authorizing use of the funds passed 123 to 14). There are more than enough votes to cut off debate and force a vote if Senate Republican leaders would just call for it. Senate leaders have been reluctant to do this for fear of offending members of their own party in the senate, but in refusing to act they risk causing real harm to Missouri families and Missouri's economy.
Let's be clear, if republican leaders in the state senate fail to act and stop Lembke's obstructionism, they will be just as responsible as Senator Lembke for the economic suffering that will result. It's time for Senators Mayer and Dempsey to decide what's more important to them; the Republican Party or the state of Missouri?
